Heaven on Earth
Heaven on earth
By Jane Air
By Jane Air
Blackberries for breakfast
ripened overnight
I pick the ones in sight
on my morning walk’s delight
ripened overnight
I pick the ones in sight
on my morning walk’s delight
A flash and a dash
of turquoise blue darts
up and down the canal’s waters
a kingfisher flits
then suddenly it sits -
this is nature’s art
at its most exquisite
The bed banks are laid
and displayed with
the purple heads of
woody nightshade
The ragworts’
sun caught
sunny disposition
gathers its’ strong position
Through heaven’s gates
sleeping souls lie
in graveyard beds
Through the thistle path, led -
a flutter and flurry of activity, bred -
of busy bees and butterflies
and thistle hair blown in the air
a flutter and flurry of activity, bred -
of busy bees and butterflies
and thistle hair blown in the air
And armies of nettles
approaching and encroaching everywhere
Bubbles of dandelion seeds
are burst and dispersed
in the puff of a breeze
- finally freed
floating
floating
Then through the next set of gates
into the open fields -
into the open fields -
and on emerald green grass
rabbits are deliciously fed
rabbits are deliciously fed
and poppy fields
where hares
can steal a secret life
away from us - and all human fuss
The skyline -
where heaven and earth join
is inside a nebulous haze of
mist and mugginess
Back home now,
past the cows
and along the track, muddy
from a heavy bout of rain
heavenly sent
And time in nature spent
is time in heaven spent
